Today we honor William Berger with the Allentown Fire Department - Engine 13 Fireman William H. Berger, 30 Allentown Fire Department. Allentown, PA Fireman Berger died from the injuries he sustained when he was caught in the second of two explosions at a residential home in the 1100 block of Oak Street. The two explosions happened twenty minutes apart. Fire crews were originally called for a home that exploded. Upon arrival they found the first home leveled, and began to put out the fire that remained. While they were at the scene of the first explosion, a second home exploded across the street. Fireman Berger had become trapped in debris. Reports indicated a broken gas main had been stripped of support after a sinkhole developed under it.
