Fire Chief Charles Lewis said the accident occurred at 8 p.m. EDT when the victim was crossing over to one of two barges holding the fireworks. 'Both barges were holding fireworks. He checked one and going over to the other,' said Lewis. 'The planking between the barges fell through, he fell into the river and disappeared below the surface.' Capt. Joseph Somma, 57, a 28-year veteran with the department. Somma was the father of seven children and one son, Joe Jr., is a firefighter in Pittsburgh.
