Today we honor James Cutchall with the FAYETTEVILLE VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPT whose LODD was 7/2/1977. James W. Cutchall, a founding father of modern emergency services in Franklin County. A memorial dedicated to Cutchall is at Fayetteville Fire Dept. Main Street in Fayetteville has been renamed after firefighter James "Jim" Cutchall who was killed by a sniper in July 1977 while responding to a fire alarm. “He was an icon in the fire service,” said Franklin County Commissioner Robert Thomas, who knew Cutchall. “He was like a magnet for young people. Fayetteville had a lot going on, and it was because of him. He was the kind of guy you wanted to be around. To have him taken away like that was sad.” Cutchall, the 33-year-old fire chief of Fayetteville Fire Department, was shot and killed while answering the alarm for a house fire.
