Chauncey Cargill

Today we honor Chauncey Cargill with the Citizen Fire Company whose LODD was 6/1/1921. As a county convention was being held, a box alarm was received from the other end of town. Several volunteer firemen, including Cargill and Filmore, manned Steelton Engine 1 and responded. As they were approaching a streetcar, the driver of the brand new pumper swerved to avoid it. The hard rubber tires skidded on the pavement and the pumper slammed sideways into the streetcar. Cargill and Filmore, who were both riding the side running board, were both crushed to death on impact. The alarm they were responding to proved to be false.
